Blog Blog Blog, it’s been too long!

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all of the E-mails checking on me. Haha, I’m still alive but have been down for a little while. I will  be possibly having another surgery on my foot/ankle to remove all the hardware. I had an infection surface that was probably from one of my open fractures. One of my doctors suggested removal because my ankle is pretty much fused at this point, and it will allow my body to fully expel the infection.

Deep in the realm of cycling…I have managed to ride a little, but not as much as I thought I’d be able to. I am walking like a champ though. I definitely get sore by the end of the day from all the activity. We’ll see how things go in the upcoming months. I really miss writing, and have vowed to myself to keep doing it! Cya soon.

I’m still alive, and will be back soon!

Thank you for the E-mails everyone. I have been dealing with some family business for the last several weeks, but will probably start posting regularly again this week.

Stay Tuned!!

Mentally Achieving Recovery

Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough time during the day to accomplish what you want? I had to hold off on my riding lately because of some of my larger projects for school, and my foot has not been in the best shape to get on the bike. I am walking around the house without my walking boot which is a good thing, but as I have said before, I am slowly getting more comfortable up on it.

I might not be riding my bike almost every day like I was previous to my accident, but I have been recovering in other areas of my life outside of cycling. I have been reconnected with parts of myself through blogging. I recently posted to my technical blog, which I felt carried some weight in regard to giving without expecting something in return.

The exercise in giving to someone in need can be just as healthy as doing hill sprints on your favorite stretch of hilly road. Both can be VERY satisfying.

Accept What Can’t be Changed

I read a blog post that spoke to me, and I’d thought I’d share. The article talks about making the switch to becoming a survivor and not a victim. I struggled with this concept a great deal. I felt alone, even though God, my family, and friends were there. It was really hard to stop blaming others for my accident, especially with the mental and physical aspects of the situation starring me in the face. I couldn’t put all the pieces back together again until I realized there are many others in this world who have gone through similar trauma and have triumphed with flying colors. I also realized how blessed I was to be here, as some have been far less fortunate.

This past weekend was another milestone. It was cool to be able to take my daughter out to the park and ride again. She and I did some laps around this sidewalk trail which is up the road from where I live. I tried to get her to ride her bike, but she insisted on wearing her skates. Since I’m wrapped around her little finger, I didn’t have one little problem with that. We had a blast.

Posting Comment Issue Resolved!

I’m so bumbed! I was just recently informed by a friend they were unable to post comment to this blog. After closer inspection, I found a little setting that I overlooked…sigh. One of those things to add to the learning experience I guess.

You may now post comments easily, without having to create an account and signing in. However, I would hope you leave your contact information or trackback when you post. Thank you!!

Neighborhood Dogs and Cats Beware: I’m on the bike again!

I’m so excited to announce I got out on my bike today and rode for the first time since my accident. I’ve done a lot of praying up until this point, and once again my prayers were answered.

I left the house about 11:45am and proceeded down an old warm-up route, which is about eleven miles. I used to hit this route before heading south of my parents into the big hills of the Cedar Hill area. I’ve done a lot of training there, and look forward to returning to all of my old routes some day. The weather was clear and the temperature was a smoldering 107F, but I didn’t give a care in the world. I had forgotten how bumpy this main stretch of road was, until it was too far to turn around. Some of the bigger bumps were a little hard on my foot, but it wasn’t enough to deter me from finishing.

It was like I’d never been on a bike before, at the average speed of 12mph. It will be a good while before I get back up to 23-26 average mph pace I’m used to traveling at. I’m not going to rush anything, for I don’t want to be told I can’t ride by my doctors.

I feel like I’ve accomplished so much and have come so far mentally and physically. I’m so thankful for my family, friends, and most importantly my faith in God.

Watch your big mouth: Some people bite back!

Holy smokes, it’s awesome to see history being made. If you didn’t see the men’s swimming 4×100 relay in the Beijing Olympics this evening, you truly missed something special. First of all, the French team was heavily favored over everyone. French reporter asked Alain Bernard from the French swim team how they would do against the Americans in the upcoming relay. Bernard said, “The Americans? We’re going to smash them. That’s what we came here for.” Well, Michael Phelps started the relay and Jason Lezak brought the gold metal home by running down the record holder Bernard on the last leg with a performance of a lifetime. Our swim team broke the relay world record by 4 seconds!

I’ve always let my legs do the talking when I’m on my bike. You never know when you’re going to have a bad day or have a mechanical or something. By the way, I got back on my bike this weekend, and it was freaking awesome. I didn’t get out on the road, but just being on my trainer was enough to satisfy my craving I’ve had to ride. It was a little difficult to get my road shoes on again, but I managed to slip them on after a few minutes. YAY! I’ve also been walking around the house without my walking boot on my right foot too. Hopefully after a little while my foot and ankle will allow me to lose the boot for good. I have to admit, it was strange putting on my heart rate monitor and gear on again. I’m looking forward to getting out on the road again.

Brief Intro…What’s the haps with this blog?

Hello everyone! My name is Ramon Mendias, but many of my cycling buddies call me “aero”. I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally have a platform to say what’s on my mind, and get some extremely valuable feedback I need from people during my long and seemingly never ending healing process.

On September 22, 2007 I was in a horrific car accident that almost ended my life. A person ran me and my 1998 Jeep Wrangler off the road, which had no doors or top on it at the time. I rolled several times before coming to a stop. Luckily, I don’t actually remember the gory aftermath, but I was unconscious for a couple of days and had to be taken to the nearest trauma center via CareFlight.

The injuries I incurred in the accident were pretty extensive. I had multiple fractures in both feet, which resulted in my right ankle getting fused later on. Two vertebrae were crushed in my back, which led to a fusion of L3, L4, and L5. Lastly, I had sustained multiple fractures in my left wrist & hand and severed the tendons on the top which also needed reconstruction. Did I mention all the skin grafts and metal hardware? =) I have had roughly 18+ surgeries since the accident, and have undergone hours of physical therapy. I’m not going to get into much of the details of some of the infections, but I’ve had my share of those too. I’m not sharing all of this to get pity or to make people feel sorry for me.

This is therapeutic to share with everyone, and if I can inspire at least one person not to give up on life regardless of their adversity, I have accomplished my goal. I am here by the grace of God, and I hope to open up some great discussion on some of your challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them. You don’t have to have been in a car wreck to have been challenged by something. This blog is for inspiration and nothing else.
